Section 504

Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, commonly referred to as simply “504”, is a federal law that protects students against discrimination based on physical or mental disability. Section 504 assures that students with disabilities have educational opportunities equal to those provided to students without disabilities. To be eligible for 504 accommodations, a student must have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. Section 504 also requires, among other things, that a student with a disability receive an equal opportunity to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities, and to be free from bullying and harassment based on disability.
